Professor Giamarellos-Bourboulis is an internal medicine and infectious diseases specialist. His main research contribution is immunomodulation in sepsis and in auto-inflammatory disorders, for which he was awarded the Young Investigator Research Award by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He has received a total of 39 awards for his studies on sepsis and has published 433 peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals.

Professor Giamarellos-Bourboulis is a leading expert in immunomodulatory treatment of septic shock and he has contributed to the recognition of hidradenitis suppurativa as an auto-inflammatory disorder. He is the current President of the European Shock Society, chairs the Hellenic Sepsis Study Group and he is the coordinator of Hellenic Sepsis Study Group (www.sepsis.gr).
